Located in the commune of Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens, the château is run by Véronique Barthe and Philippe Gardère. The vineyard extends over 5 hectares of organically cultivated land and is Demeter-certified. The Château owes its name to the Battle of the Pont d'Arcole which opposed Napoleon's army to Austrian soldiers in northern Italy in 1796. Jean Barthe, soldier of the Napoleonic Guard and ancestor of the owners, participated in this historic victory. Thanks to a few gold coins offered by the Emperor for marrying on the same day as him, he acquired the family's first plot of vines in the Bordeaux region. For more than two centuries, the property has been passed down from generation to generation.
Made from 70% of Merlot and 30% of Cabernet Sauvignon picked by hand, this unique Château d'Arcole wine is vinified in small rotating stainless steel vats. At the end of fermentation, the wines are run off by gravity directly into barrels, without any pump, in order to obtain greater finesse. Barrel ageing lasts from 14 to 18 months, then bottled without filtration.
The Château d'Arcole develops very intense aromas of red fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), with toasted and grilled notes. The palate is smooth, full and charming. Fine and elegant, it can be enjoyed young on the fruit but its well-structured structure allows it to be left to age for a few years in the cellar.
It will accompany both grilled meats and game in sauce.
